I was recently at a networking event where someone asked me, "How often should I update my headshot?”
It's a common question. My typical response is every three to five years or sooner if you've had a major change in appearance (weight loss/gain; hairstyle; glasses vs. no glasses, etc.).
Another comment I heard during that same conversation was, 'Well, I don’t have a current headshot because I don’t need one."
Until you do.
The best time to get a headshot is when you don’t need a headshot.
Let me explain.
Life is unpredictable, you never know what opportunities are on your horizon.
I've had several clients call me in a panic or who have regretted waiting until the last minute to get their headshot taken. Many times they had to settle for that quick fix, you know the one where your friend or spouse tries to take something with the cell phone to tie you over.
“I am not willing to invest in myself”
“Oh you don’t look like your headshot…”
instead of focusing on the real reason for your meeting.
As we move from summer into the fall season, networking events and conferences start filling calendars.
Having a fresh, professional headshot ready means one less thing to stress about, especially if you're speaking, presenting or leading an event.
If you are in a leadership role, consider hosting a Company Headshot Day.
Don't wait until you’re asked for a headshot. Be ready with one that you love.
I'm a professional headshot photographer servicing Northern Virginia and the DC Metro area. I look forward to hosting individuals in my cozy headshot studio in the heart of Old Town, Alexandria. Alternatively, I make "house calls" and can support Company or Conference Headshot events.
