(Not only did you read my email, but some of you wrote me back!)
Now, that might not sound like a big deal- but I spent the first five years of running my photography studio avoiding it like a pothole on I-95.
Not out of laziness. Out of FEAR.
Fear that no one would read it.
Fear that everyone would unsubscribe... or never subscribe at all.
Fear of running out of things to say.
Fear that I wouldn't be able to keep anyone's attention, or stay consistent.
But guess what? I asked AI to review and analyze my newsletter stats recently and here's the surprising truth:
Because I stayed out of my own head for nine straight months, the numbers don't just look good -- the grand robot said compared to industry stands -- they're exceptional.
According to industry benchmarks (source: Mailchimp & Campaign Monitor) here's how the creative and photography industry stacks up:
Turns out, my audience wants to hear from me. What a plot twist.
And yet... Imposter Syndrome, that long-term, rent-free roommate in my head, still pops in to question my decisions, even though I know and teach the benefits of email marketing in my Photography Business class.
I know that maintaining an email list means I control the communication, not some social media algorithm that randomly decides whether my content reaches 12 people on a Monday or 13.4K on a Friday.
Creating a newsletter isn't exactly fun - especially when you're a perfectionist rereading it 30 times before daring to hit "send." But these stats and the replies I get - remind me that this kind of relationship-based marketing is working. Even if it only leads to a few bookings here and there, I'm building something deeper.
Through my newsletter I'm:
Every time I start doubting myself, I say the same thing:
"Get out of your own way, Laura"
Success rarely comes from comfort, and if you want to grow as a small business owner you've got to hit "send" even if the roommate says otherwise.
