“Word to the Nation: Guard zealously your right to serve in the Armed Forces, for without them, there will be no other rights to guard.” – John F. Kennedy
Celebrate Your Legacy
When I retired from a life of military service, it was disappointing to see that I hadn't really taken many pictures in uniform.
For my retirement ceremony, I put together a slide show, and I struggled to find decent pictures in every rank.
In fact, both my Father and Step-Father served full careers in the Air Force and Navy, respectively, and I have less than a dozen pictures to prove it. How sad is that?
My adult sons are curious about my service, especially as one of them is starting his own military journey, but it's too late for me.
It doesn't have to be too late for you. Even if you are about to leave the service, take a moment to capture your legacy.
If you are still in uniform, take time to document your journey every year, at every rank. Celebrate Your Service.

Official Navy Photo
The Navy will no longer show officer service record photos during promotion, selection and assignment boards.
Announced in NAVADMIN 247/20, the change took effect Sept. 1, 2020 as a way to eliminate the possibility of bias in the service’s board process.
However the message also states that the change in board policy does not eliminate the ongoing requirement for officers to maintain a current photograph in their official service record.
All officers, regardless of status, in both the Regular Navy and the Navy Reserve, are required to update their official photo within three months of accepting a new promotion.
Session is $295. Includes one high-res digital image, sized to the required 4x6, no print service provided, official photos can be submitted electronically via My Navy Portal.
Note: MILPERSMAN 1070-181, paragraph 6, authorizes commands to "reimburse officers who use commercial sources to produce photographs."
