Have you ever tried your hand at something, only to discover or confirm that you didn't want to do it? That was me when I transitioned from the military service.
I had a laundry list of things I knew I didn't want to do, namely everything I had tried during my 3 decades in uniform.
I delved into government contracting, not because I thought I'd love it, but to affirm that it wasn't my calling. I tried photographing weddings—I took on the role of a second shooter, only to solidify my realization that once was more than enough. You'll even find a emphatic "No" on my website's FAQ page about photographing weddings. And by the way, it's not the same as a corporate meeting or community event....but nice try.
How do you know you're ready for something new? The truth is, you don't. You have to keep trying. Passion doesn't always announce itself; many times, you have to show up consistently and then be mindful of how you feel afterwards. When I was building my headshot portfolio, I volunteered to show up monthly and provide complimentary headshots at my local Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class. I always felt energized after consoling soon to be transitioning Veterans that there was life after the uniform. The rest is history.
People often ask, "How did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?" The reality? I didn't. I stumbled into it, clueless about where to start, what to do, and what resources were available. As a Veteran, I craved an SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), a structured plan like the ones we created for our often absent or last minute relief before detaching from the command.
Disappointed by the absence of a comprehensive guide, I decided to create one in collaboration with Capital Photography Center, a local woman-owned photography school servicing the DC/Maryland/Virginia community.
