Embracing The Opportunity To Grow

“Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection”

– Mark Twain

When I first started my business five years ago, I didn't have the confidence that more clients would continue to walk through the door, so I catered to everyone, and everything.

I probably didn't convey a clear message or my true value.

It's the downside of being an overachiever and a 'pleaser.'

But that's what inexperienced entrepreneurs do, until we find our voice and our audience.

Finding your brand voice and your ideal customer doesn't happen overnight.

It may not even happen in the first few years, but that's okay.

The key is to just show up and try, because if you don't, you'll never learn what works and what doesn't.

One vehicle to help you grow as an entrepreneur, are client reviews.

Unlike the corporate world or in the military services, getting evaluated is now public.

There are no private review boards, or one-on-ones with your boss.

Your new boss is Google.  And Ms. Google puts everything out there for all to see; the good, the bad and the ugly.

According to research consumers read reviews because they:

  • Offer valuable guidance from those who've used the service/product
  • Help future clients to decide from a crowded market
  • Attest to a small business' reliability and credibility
But do you know why consumers take the time to write reviews? Here are the top few reasons:
  • Help others make a better buying decision
  • Share an experience, good or bad
  • Reward a company for good performance

Last month I hit a milestone.  After two years of collecting Google reviews, I reached 50.

Fifty reviews may not sound like a lot to you, especially when it represents probably 5-10 percent of who I serviced.

But in those fifty reviews I learned a few things and gained some great perspective:

1. I understand how my clients feel before and after their experience with me.
2. Empathy is wanted and needed, especially when your client feels vulnerable in front of a camera.
3. Representation matters, if you can't see yourself in my portfolio then why should I expect your business?
4. Answering every probable question or concern before a session is appreciated, so is responsiveness.
5. People genuinely enjoy supporting small businesses that are professional, efficient and compassionate.
6. Transparency builds trust.

I appreciate every single review, because let's face it, time is precious.

The client went home after hanging for 1-2 hours with me and my corny jokes in the studio or on location and still found time to send me appreciation and opportunities to grow as a business and as an entrepreneur.

Thank you!
